The Lovins Group was founded in 1992 as Lovins and Associates Consulting. Alan H. Lovins has been in practice since 1975 as a clinical psychologist, and his main focus was working with couples and families. He had always believed that success or failure in work or family was largely contingent on the quality of people’s relationships. Being together with others always has challenges and families have their own special dynamics.
Those who are able to work as a team with good communication, understanding, and tolerance achieve a good quality of life as well as success in their endeavors.
In Lovins’ prior work with families, the family business often surfaced as a discussion topic, and it sometimes was clearly the generator of tension and hard feelings. Family businesses are started by the founder in order to benefit the family, not to cause dissention, and it can create great pain for all when it hurts the family. Lovins found himself working often with business issues in family sessions. They could be issues between husband and wife, parents and children, siblings, or other extended family members like in-laws, uncles, cousins, and more. There were important subjects that family members found hard to discuss, like succession, estate planning, children who did not perform their jobs, and parents’ retirement as a few examples. Lovins thought it needed to be a major part of the work if families and businesses were going to thrive and support one another.
By encouraging families in business to stay clear-headed, maintain their values, communicate honestly and fully, Lovins discovered that he could help them improve and grow their business while they strengthened family ties of teamwork and love.
The Lovins Group is now made up of four associates – Alan Lovins, Don Opatrny, Paul Rhoda, and Dan Raucci. Each has a special area of expertise that contributes to the successful outcome of consulting with family businesses, closely-held businesses, and professional partnerships.
